Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

Hi Jeff,

I was snooping on your old Pocatello marathon race report from 2014. Got any tips for running the race? I ran the half in 2017 and I feel like I have a decent memory of what that was like. Is the first half all paved? Any tidbits of info would be helpful if you have the time.

Thanks in advance!

The first half is all paved and nearly all downhill and can be fast. The key to is work with the downhill and not burnout as you have to deal with the rollers in the second half. From 14-21 you have all the hills, just be patient. Go for even effort through here not even pacing. Once past Century HS you have the flat into the finish but it will start to get warmer and the fatigue will be setting in. Ensure to fuel and hydrate early and often. The toughest part for me is the miles 16-22 (rollers to Century) mentally and physically. Good luck.

Thanks for the help!

As it is a smaller event, is it wise to carry some water through the first half of the marathon? I know it says there are aid stations. Have they been reliable in your experience?

No need to carry water, the stations are well supplied with water and aid. Check the website to see where they are giving out gels, etc. and then decide if you need to carry more. The last time I ran it I carried two extra gels in case I needed them between the aid stations.
