Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

Nice easy 7M run early this morning.  Great weather...30 degrees and no wind.  Foot is feeling better, can still tell it was there but no issue on the run.  I tried a new pair of shoes and they worked great.  In fact, I went back and bought 2 more pair of the Trigon 4 Ride shoes at a cost of only $37.50!

May try a short run at lunch today.

total time: 50:15  (Saucony Trigon Ride - 7 miles)

Great 5M tempo run at lunch today...6:12 avg. pace.  No pain in my foot at all!   I registered for the PF Chang's Rock and Roll marathon this morning...Phoenix here I come!  Now I need to book my flights...it is going to be a surprise "dad and son" trip and we will stay with friends (one of my son Justin's best friends) in Fountain Hills so it should be fun.

total time:  31:00  (Saucony T2 - 212 miles)

That's great Jeff I'm glad its okay. I was hoping it might not cause anymore difficulty. $37.50 thats a good deal! What type of mileage do you get out of those shoes?

From Jon on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 11:24:27

Where did you get them from?

From jtshad on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 11:41:27

Thanks Kory. They foot is feeling a lot better...probably time to retire the shoes I was wearing when it started hurting. I only got 400 miles out of them...usually get more like 500 on those shoes. I expect to get 400-500 miles on the Trigon's.

Jon, I got the shoes at Sports Authority yesterday...$50 a pair with a a 1 day coupon for $25 off a $100 purchase.

From Cal on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 11:56:21

Hey Jeff, is there a sure-fire way to tell if your shoes are worn out? I haven't been very good at tracking mileage on them until lately.

From wheakory on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 12:06:39

I usually can go up to 500 mile and be okay. I keep try of all my miles on my shoes. Right now I need new shoes I've never tried Saucony.

From wheakory on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 12:09:14

Jeff the Jingle bell run is it a flat course around Community Park. I've never actually been there. I might be running it because my wife wants to go Christmas shopping up there, and plus I support a business up there and do there Web consulting. They need me to come up there and do maintenance on their computer. I'll yet you know tomorrow.

From jtshad on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 14:39:32

Cal, there is no "sure fire" way besides watching the wear on the shoes and gauging the fit and feel of the cushioning. If the shoes feel "flat" and doen't offer much rebound under your feet, that can be a good sign of needing to be replaced. The shoes I run my marathons in can only go about 350 miles before the tread wears out. My trainers typical 450-550 miles.

Kory, I still might run the Jingle bell run...my lunch run was great, no pain at all at a 6:12 pace. Call me at home to let me know and we can try to hook up...523-0734.

From wheakory on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 17:23:17

Thanks Jeff, I'm about 80% sure I'll run it. I want to feel the pain of a 5k. Besides its been a while since I've ran one. I'll give you a call Friday I'm not sure what time I'll head up there but I will definitely want to warm-up a bit. Thanks.

What is your goal time for Phoenix? I have heard it is pretty fast from my sister and others. I know that Gebrselassie set the world record in the 1/2 marathon on that course.

From marciej on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 23:23:15

I am glad your foot is feeling better. Its amazing what a new pair of shoes can do. I have heard nothing but good stuff about PF's RocknRoll Marathon. Good luck on your training for it!

From MichelleL on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 23:53:10

Jeff-Nice tempo run today. I guess the 5K is this weekend? Good luck on it if you are able to get out. Your trip should be really fun. Will you be racing it or just using it to help you get in some good base training?

Cal-I know I need new shoes when my body starts to get wierd aches and pains, and that is usually 450-550 miles, same as Jeff.

Kory-I have had a couple of Sauconys. I like them, but I have had a couple where the mesh by the toe tears on each side, so just watch for reinforcement, like a leather strip on the sides where the shoe bends.

From James on Fri, Dec 07, 2007 at 00:06:07

Saucony are the bomb! The key is to find the shoe that fits your foot. I personally like the Omni for me, I have had every one of them. But I aslo like to mix it up and try different brands. Again, it is not as much the brand as the make of the shoe, but you can't go wrong with a good pair of saucony.

From jtshad on Fri, Dec 07, 2007 at 15:11:30

Thanks everyone. My foot is feeling a lot better, I do think it was the shoes giving out.

I too love Saucony...the only brand that I have really run in. Getting these Trigon's has been great, really seem like better shoes than the Tornado's that I have been training in.

I am looking forward to PF Chang's as well since I have heard mostly good stuff about it. I put my target time as 2:35 on the registration...we'll see.

My friend who I am staying with might run the half dependin on if I can keep her on her training for the next 5 weeks and if her husband will support her in doing it (even just a go for it!).

Yes, the Jingle Bell 5K is Saturday...Kory W. is likely coming up as well. Will likely try for an even 17min finish and throw a few miles in before and a good run afterwards to get in some mileage for the day.
