Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

 I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Very easy 5M run this morning, just couldn't get the pace up, knees a little bit soft this morning.  A bit tired this morning, so I went short as well.  Try to make it up at lunch today.

Estimated 5.25M (distance and time with no GPS but pretty accurate from knowledge of course and clock in office building) run at lunch at moderate pace (6:25). Good run, no knee pain and pace was easy.

I am looking at my race calendar, targeting St. George as my goal race and am reconsidering running Mesa Falls marathon in late August and instead thinking of Deseret News in July.  How is the course for DNM, does it beat you up?  I want to get in 4 marathons this year and want to be ready for a low 2:30's at SGM.  Any thoughts?

Des News will beat the living daylights out of you. It's a brutal course and often hot. Seeing as to how you're having knee problems, it might be wise to skip it. Take a look at Park City (mid-August), which you would have a chance at winning. Park City certainly not a fast course, but is much easier on the legs (lots of soft dirt paths).

I ran Des. News last year, and I really was fine after the race and had a quick recovery. But you do need to run a lot of downhill to prepare for this course and that's what I did and I PR'ed. But like Paul said if your not prepared it will beat you up, because the course drops fast from the top where you start.

I wouldn't run it if your having knee issues like Paul said. This course is worst than the Pocatello Marathon. I exactly ran the second half of the course faster than the first, but I was a little conservative on the downhill, and I'm sure that's why I did come away that sore.

Sasha also advised me not to run this course either this year, and I'm not sure if I'm going to run it. If I do I probably will use it as a training run.

How about run St. George in under 2:22, and then do the Trials for your 4th marathon? And if not, go to Richmond, St. Jude, or Rocket City?

I appreciate your confidence in my abilities, but dang man, a 2:22? That would mean keeping up with Paul! Small steps...I am targeting 2:30-2:35 and think that my mind is writing checks my body will have a hard time cashing.

Your Ogden is equivalent to about 2:33 in St. George taking the heat into consideration. So I'd say assuming no disasters during the race and between now and then, you have a sub-2:35 in St. George in the bag. 2:22 is a different level, though, and the big question is in how much natural speed you have, and what kind of speed it is. What are your best times in 100, 800, mile, and 5 K?

I haven't really done any short (1M or less) races and haven't done track speedwork (100m-800m repeats) per se. I am planning on doing so track repeats this summer with couple of fast guys here in IF that will be running SGM. My fastest official 5K race is a 17:40. In training I have run 16:30ish, so I know I could get near 16, I just haven't had the opportunity to focus or schedule a flat out 5K. We have done a 2M "fun run" for our company picnic the last couple of years...result in the 10:30 range on a hilly course.
