Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

 I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

7M easy early this morning.  My achilles was still a bit sore, so I broke open new pair of shoes to see if that help, and it did for a while.  At about 5M, I started feeling it a little again but nothing like yesterday.  So, I think it is time to retire both pair of Trigon's Rides (between 400-500 miles each).  Overall a decent run at about a 7:40 avg. pace.   Saw 1 shooting star and 3 other runners out at 5am (I knew all 3 of the women, good for them getting out this early).

Saucony HRC Stratos - 7 miles

6M at lunch on another perfect running day.  Unfortunately, not a perfect day for my body running.  My left achilles is still aching pretty good so my pace today was an easy one (planned some speed work!).  In addition, my GPS went out about 0.33M into the run, so the time is approximately, but it felt like and ended being about a 7:00 pace.  Will stretch and try to ice the achilles tonight and I may take some time off the remainder of the week to get it feeling better.

Only 1 shooting star? You must not have been watching, or running in a dark area.

Death to the old shoes!

From jtshad on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 09:52:24

I starting watching after the first, just too much light.

I took 3 pair of my old shoes that have been sitting in my garage and dropped them off at a donation place.

I was just reading one of the discussion board postings about how often runners change shoes... Sasha and Josse say sometimes they run over 1,000 miles on the same shoes...to me, it's one of those things that it's easy to be careful with, and why risk injury if you can prevent it by changing shoes, right?

If you could see a shooting star it means you were not going fast enough!!! :)

Lucia, Sasha and I guess Josse are of a different breed. I'm with Jeff at sac'n the shoes at 400-500 it's just not worth the pain.

Jeff, Eric (Phoenix) has been having achilles problems and is actually having some scraping done with them that he told me is working. You might want to look through some of his entries for what he's done to get rid of some of the pain...

Sorry to hear about the achilles problem. Sounds like you are doing everything to get it back to normal. You have a huge base and that should carry you through this bump in the road.

From johnr on Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 16:53:27

Jeff, you're in monster shape. Your mileage has been really strong. Don't be afraid to take a bit of time off. You'll get it back quick, and it will be worth it to take care of this quick.

Good luck. John R.

Thanks folks for the advice and thoughts. I think what I have a class 1 calf strain, not achilles due to the location of the pain. I am planning on taking some time off in the next couple of days and start back in light. Also, start hydrating better (I don't drink nearly enough water), icing the area and stretching well. I think it was from the accumulation of 85+ mile weeks for the past 5 weeks, so a light week now should help avoid a bigger problem before TCM.

Jeff - Great insight on what you need to do to get better. We can all learn from this especially me. I'm glad your going to take a lighter load. Don't forget you want to rock the Poky half marathon.
