Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

Great day today.  Got up early and caught a ride down to Pocatello with Lynette and McKay.  Once there, met up with Andrea and did a 3M warmup then got on the buses to the start.  Stomach issues from yesterday continuing but not too bad up to the start.  Right before we get on the buses, see a young guy in an ISU warmup suit and chat with him for a bit.  He indicated a goal of 1:10, so I knew I was in trouble for the overall win.

At the start, the weather had settled down and the high winds in Poky had died out in Inkom at the start.  This race is all rolling hills despite what the profile shows so keeping a consistent and maintainable pace is the trick.  The gun goes off.

1- 5:21   Go out hard with the ISU guy, John Ricardi.  The pace feels ok, but I know that I likely cannot sustain it for the whole 13 so I back off to run my race and let him go.

2- 5:34  Just crusing through the rollers.

3- 5:41  A bit more uphill here but still rolling and passing marathoners.

4-5:49  More hills.

5- 5:32  A bit of downhill section so I pick up the pace.

6- 5:39  Still feeling really good.  The next mile is where I got my side stitch last year so I just focus on nice a steady running

7- 5:45  Feeling good.  Take a Gu right about here.

8- 6:06  The hill under the freeway up to Century high school.  Not too long but a momentum killer.

9- 5:58  Over the worst of the hill and now just catching my breathe and rolling on the uphill through here.

10- 5:49  Breathe back, but now starting to feel a little intestinal distress.

11- 5:51  Intestinal issues getting a little worse, just focusing on keeping consistent.

12- 5:55  Ok, insides not feeling good.  Trying to decide whether to stop at a porta pottie or keep going...I keep going.

13- Made the turns into the park and I can see the finish...and the blue huts!

0.13 - 0:45  Finish with all that my insides will allow.

Overall I secured a second place finish, the 1st Master and take 3 minutes off my time from last year!  Young ISU runner John smoked the run in 1:09:xx with a great race.

As for our little IF running group, Andrea won 1st overall in the HM, Lynette was 1st Master just behind her and McKay was 3rd in his AG!  Not to bad for the IF group.

Afterwards, did a 2M cool down with Lynette, then a 4.9M cooldown with Andrea.  After the awards, my family had driven down after my daugther's soccer game and we spent the afternoon at the Ross Park water Park.  What a great day!

Kory W. deserves huge kudos for a smoking 2:36, new course record and outrunning Chuck Engle!  His training was superb and he peak just right to blow the marathon away!

Congratulation, that was an awesome race. Also, it was really nice to meet you. I hope we have the opportunity to talk more in the future.

Congrats on the race win and the nice time. Jon Ricardi is ISUs best runner right now from the mile on up, so it's no shame in losing to him.

Great race considering all of stomach issues you had to suffer through. Way to hang tough all the way to the finish on what sounds like a very tough course.

Nice!

From Robert on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 10:31:48

Great job! Especially when the bowels are giving you extra motivation to finish. One of the worst feelings.

From Superfly on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 11:08:21

Once again great job for you Jeff. You always seem to run very well and you just keep getting better!

From dave holt on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 11:56:42

Very solid Jeff -nice job.

From Lucia on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 13:34:58

Congratulations Jeff you did a fabulous job! 2nd overall and 1st on your age group... that's something most of us mortals can only dream of! Now reward yourself and get some sleep!

From Dave S on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 15:23:08

Nice race Jeff on a tough course. I miss being there this year it's a fun race. I was thinking about doing the half also this year as a tune up for SGM but wound up injured.

From Jon on Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 22:05:45

Nice job on the race- sounds like a good tune up for TCM.

From Adam RW on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 00:45:16

With a 1:09 ahead of you, you more or less did all you could do. Great race! I guess yesterday was just the day of 2nd place finishes. TCM is going to be a cake walk for you!

From jtshad on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 12:14:39

Thanks everyone, it was a good race and I ran almost exactly where I wanted to...I think the intestinal issues robbed me of my sub 1:15, but I will take it. Helps make me feel prepared for TCM and the 2:35 target.

From JohnK on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 18:36:34

Way to go, Jeff. That's a fast time on what sounds like a tough course. Hope things continue going well between now and Twin Cities.

From Neil on Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 13:19:55

Great race. I can sympathize with the intestinal issues. I have yet to figure out a formula for preempting them. To run that fast with those kind of issues going on is amazing to me. Who am I kidding, to run that fast period is amazing!

From MichelleL on Sat, Sep 06, 2008 at 14:01:15

A belated congrats on your race. Its tough to push at the end when you are looking for the huts. How close was #3?

From jtshad on Sat, Sep 06, 2008 at 14:07:13

Thanks again everyone.

Michelle, 3rd place was about 10-11 minutes back, another good local Master's runner who had just run TOU the week before. In fact, my friend McKay was 3rd in the 40-44 age group and was 12th overall, so us old guys rocked this race!
