Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

No running today to let the foot rest.   Based on the location of the pain, I think I may have a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal.  I have an appointment for next Tuesday to check it out to see if it a possible avulsion or Jones fracture (No Jones fracture...please!).  Looks like rest or cross training for at least the next few days.

I'm sorry Jeff. I'm wondering if the rain had something to do with it in the marathon. This could cause your foot to move around so much. You will be in my prayers.

Stink, stink, stink, stink. Hopefully it isn't serious. Do you have a place you can do deep water running?

From JimF on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 11:14:29

Hopefully it is not a stress fracture and you get good news from the Dr on Tuesday.

From Adam RW on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 12:12:43

Sorry Jeff. I feel your pain. We will hope for the best and at least it happened now entering winter and not at the start of the summer... Good luck and try and distract yourself from it this weekend.

From wh on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 13:03:56

Jeff, I won't panic or go overboard it might just be something simple and not a fracture. Wait till you see the doctor to know for sure. Have you tried different shoes? Does it hurt when you walk all the time?

From jtshad on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 13:08:01

Based on talking with others and the location of the pain, it it likely this or Peroneal Tendoitis (what Cody had in May/June). Different shoes are what make it feel better (I am wearing my running shoes now) and it hurts (dull) all the time and is sensitive to the touch. I have done the "hop" test and can hop a few times before feeling some pain. I am going to rest/elevate and wrap/tape it this weekend and see if that helps.

Oh no Jeff. Dean had a stress fracture of one of his metatarsals - yuck. I am hoping this is not what you have. He then had a really weird injury later on the other foot (essentially under 2nd metatarsal) and shoes and biomechanics were the culprit. He was using pads (he taped them to the insole of his shoe -- as he is a 'minimalist', and actually now only runs in Nike Free's) and got hooked on Egoscue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egoscue_Method). Egoscue is pretty cool, part yoga, part pilates and part stretching exercises (they call them e-cises). The pads were similar to http://www.fitzz.com/Metatarsal-Pads-Medium-Ball-of-Foot_p_6032.html but he made his own and placed them exactly where he would give support to the toe.

He has been running essentially injury free now for almost 2 years. It (Egoscue) does take a time commitment though.

Good luck!!

I hope the best for you at your appt. next week.

From Bill Mandler on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 18:30:30

Jeff-Sorry to hear about your foot. I hope it all turns out OK at the doctor. I have worried for years about how I might react if I got a real injury. I have had small stuff but luckily nothing that kept me off my feet for more than a week. BE STRONG!!!

From Cal on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 19:43:54

Doesn't sound good, but hopefully it turns out to be trivial. Injuries stink. Good luck!

From dave holt on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 19:59:53

Crossing my fingers for ya.

I had some serious foot pain after SGM but the days off have seemed to help. Maybe you can get lucky, too.
