Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

Not my day today...2:43:12 (way off of goals).  That said, I was able to finish 5th OA and 1st Master (the 4 ahead of me were all in their 20's).  Awards went 5 deep OA so I nabbed a plaque and a gift certficate instead of an age group award.

Ran first 15 miles with Greaham Niemer and Chris Colgan (Greaham ended up 2nd, Chris faded at 20 miles).  We went out pretty easy hitting all the early miles between 5:45 - 6:10 (depening on the hills) and thought we were doing ok.  But I knew it was going to be slow day when we hit the half in 1:19 and change.  Then at 15M I really started to feel my IT band starting to get tight and at 18M it was getting bad and I really slowed.  At 25M the wheels really started to fall off...I was running 3rd OA, then got passed like I was standing still and then a young college age kid name Tom started charging on me just before 26M then nabbed 4th with 10 meters to go as I pushed with all I had...that sucked!

The day started off cold but ended up being about perfect running conditions (though it never got much above 40 degrees until the last 5 miles).   May have overdressed a bit but was comfortable for most of the race.  This was probably the most convoluted course I have ever run, lots of turns and twists, doubling back on itself and running against the crowds of runners coming the other direction.  It was pretty running through the park with all the fall colors but it was too full of turns (way worse that the second half of Utah Valley).

Overall pretty disappointed with the performance against what I went into the race expecting to do.  So, I think that this race performance was just result of accummulation of mileage and races over the year....now time to relax and scale back for a while.  This was my fifth marathon this year so I am sure that the "trials of miles and miles of trials" attributed to this result, but I feel that I had a good racing year on whole.

Splits: 5:47, 6:08, 6:10, 5:56, 5:55, 5:59, 5:57, 5:52, 5:54, 6:05, 6:24, 6:09, 5:54, 5:58, 6:15, 6:08, 6:10, 6:21, 6:18, 6:19, 6:26, 6:30, 6:33, 6:35, 6:32, 6:50, 2:07 (.2 or I had it a 0.35M).

Sorry to hear it wasn't your day, but you did get in the top 5. You've put in a lot of miles with little recovery between marathon's and have had a great ride this year. The toll of a lot of races and little recovery can be a setback at some point. But you are so good at consecutive races. You've got an amazing recovery ability. Let me know if you need anything.

Great race my friend and get some rest. I would really tone your mileage down for a good refreshing. I've felt good since I've done that the last little while. Take Care.

I know this was not the result that you were looking for but great job hanging tough down the stretch and getting 5th. You have ran some great races this year and are amazingly consistent. It was nice spending some time with you while you were in town and hope that you can get some rest and enjoy the time with your family.

Way to hang it there and finish strong Jeff. Marathons are tough when you have an 'off' day. I agree with you - you have raced a lot this year. I bet you will come back really strong after a little 'down' time; running just for fun is very rejuvinating.

Take care!

Sorry to hear you didn't run as great as you hoped. But 5th place and 1st Masters is still pretty darn good- heck, if that were SGM, you would have won a free trip to Japan! But taking a break now sounds like a great plan.

From Rachel on Sat, Oct 17, 2009 at 20:31:46 from 63.228.140.68

Good job Jeff - don't be too disappointed, you're amazing... Safe travel home...

From Neil on Sat, Oct 17, 2009 at 23:13:13 from 174.19.137.95

Running is a deeply personal endeavor- at least for me it is. So I fully understand the feeling of disappointment that comes from not being able to perform up to the lofty standards we often set for ourselves. That said, fifth place in a big city marathon, and 1st place in the Masters Category, ain't exactly chopped liver. Just sayin. ;)

From Ashbaker on Sat, Oct 17, 2009 at 23:28:45 from 76.23.56.75

They pretty much said it all Jeff. but from the looks of things you really gave it everything. Sometimes your best races aren't necessarily the ones that look good on paper. I think you know what I'm saying right?

From jtshad on Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 07:14:20 from 12.50.234.98

Thanks, everyone I truly appreciate the support and encouragement. I don't want to come across as a whiner and am satisfied with the result and effort.

Neil, thanks for the reality check. You are right, I am happy with the result despite not meeting my expectations. It was another race at which I put it all on the line and came away with another learning experience about myself.

Steve, I know what you are saying!

Jon and Kory, it is indeed time to scale things back for a while.

Rachel and Bonnie, thanks for the encouragement!

Sorry to hear you didn't have such a great race, but it's good you got a prize for 1st master! 5 marathons in a year is pretty impressive though, so you deserve a bit of a rest!

From Superfly on Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 11:56:33 from 208.117.127.110

Not bad for an off day Jeff. You continue to run great races over and over again. Top 5 is Top 5 every way you look at it. So Good Job man.

I can echo the above that some more mellow training wouldn't hurt for a while. It seems a break lets you get hungry and want to come back faster the next round.

Anyways your awesome and hope you recover well.

Wow Jeff fifth on your fifth marathon race by no mean feat.....well done and I know the feeling of disappointment of not achieving your own personal goals....dont we all set our standards too high and if we didnt we wouldnt achieve more than we expected in the long run.

I think youve had a great year of racing and training... with some down time I am sure 2010 will be a year for some pretty fast running.

again well done you hung in tough.... I hate twisty winding courses and actually avoid races like this I just hate turning when running ha ha (its because Im so clumsy lol) ;-)

From Burt on Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 12:27:27 from 98.167.151.26

Great job, Jeff. You're always an inspiration even when you're not at your best.

From JD on Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 12:34:42 from 166.216.128.76

Congratulations on an awesome year of racing! You're a strong runner.

From Mark on Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 21:04:04 from 173.168.88.68

Great job Jeff! Even on an off day, still 5th place! Sorry you missed out on 4th place so close to the end, but you were still in the prize range and still 1st masters. You never cease to inspire.

From Twinkies on Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 23:31:02 from 98.202.132.86

Fifth overall for your 5th marathon this year is great. Especially with guys half your age.

From Robert on Mon, Oct 19, 2009 at 09:26:05 from 70.58.141.71

Hey, another feather for the cap. Great job!

From Paul on Mon, Oct 19, 2009 at 09:59:54 from 174.23.83.140

Sorry it wasn't the race you wanted, but congrats anyway on the master's win. It's kind of nice when your "off days" are better than your PR a few years ago. Hope you had a nice time in Indy. It's a nice town, if you know where to look.

From Adam RW on Mon, Oct 19, 2009 at 22:24:08 from 67.186.226.36

For an off day, way to go! An O.A. award, no matter how you felt about the race, has to be a pat on the back.

From argentinerocket on Tue, Oct 20, 2009 at 10:35:02 from 69.171.176.48

Sorry you didn't live up to your own expectations but you did awesome and all of us here on the blog still admire you profoundly!

From Barry on Tue, Oct 20, 2009 at 17:26:20 from 67.61.234.251

Jeff, sorry things did not work out the way you wanted them too. Now enjoy some much needed time off.
