Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

 I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

I took my own advice and after a conversation with Kory last night, I decided that I need to chill a bit with my running to find the "fun" again, so I decided to sleep in this morning and do a solo run today at lunch.  I am heading home early today to take my wife and daughter to the airport so they can have a girl's weekend in Denver with their best friends who just moved there.  So my son and I will have a guy's weekend here!

8 miles after dropping off the girls at the airport.  Cool, cloudy weather but a nice easy run with my mp3 and running music...a better run than yesterday! (Ride Red)

What? This is suppose to be "fun" no one ever told me that before!! :)

I think it sounds like a great idea, I would love to take some time off but I'm paranoid of getting fat again, especially this time of year.

I don't think I will fully take time off, but scale back for a bit and try to find the joy again. I realized after SGM that I spent the rest of the month just running easy and it was great. When we ran the race last weekend, by mile 6 it was just not fun (the hammy and back issues didn't help). So, after yesterday's run, I realized that a "chill" period will help so I am scaling back for a little bit to get refreshed. It has been a great 1 1/2 year run since last summer and I need this period to get refocused for even better training next year to hopefully have another run of good races, God willing!

Jeff,

I am just working my way out of a "chill" period and I think it did me a world of good. Most of my little nagging injuries seem to be gone and while my pace is slow, I am enjoying my running more and don't look at it as a chore every day.

I know at my age I cannot run 3000+ miles every year without a few breaks.

After taking a few days off to take care of my Belle, running this morning seemed like a joy, a privelege, a gift! I look forward to you getting this back by missing only a couple of mornings Jeff, it sure doesn't take long!

Amen to the "chill" period idea. I think most everyone needs one of those once a year or so. Better to take them voluntarily than do what I usually do and keep pushing and wait for a nasty injury to force the issue.

From Kory on Fri, Nov 12, 2010 at 19:38:14 from 134.50.89.3

The key word is chore. When you realize your always thinking about when to fit in runs each day no matter what, that's like a drug addict wanting the quick fix to feel better. We want a quick running fix to not feel lazy for the day.

I know this is what I went through. Running should be free from stress and feeling like a chore. It should feel like an environmental/spiritual escape.

Jeff, your doing the right thing by finding the joy again.

Maybe the best thing for me was getting hit by a truck, because inside I don't know if I could have slowed down.
