Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

7:30am...ran with the XC boys (Justin, Matthew, Ben) for a 10 mile loop around the river.  Progression run started slower and the boys pushed hard at the end.  Justin ran close to or under 6:00 pace for the last 3 miles.   10 miles in 1:13.   I went back out for 2 miles with Katelyn to finish off 12 miles on a beautiful morning!  (Mirage Red)

No early run, slept in as I was planning on a lunch run.  I hooked up with Erik Teig (2:26 at TCM for 22nd) who was in town and we did a greenbelt loop and into SRL around the lake for 6.3 miles.  Nice and easy just catching up and having a good talk about life.  Fun times even though my hammy was talking to me.  (Mirage Red)

5 miles with the boys after work through the neighborhood in about 37 minutes.  Hammy really tight, taking this weekend off...not running Open race at NXN.  (Boost)

We did not get to the hotel until about 1:45am and to bed after 2am.  We slept in and had a bite for breakfast and I went out for a run about 10am.  6 miles from the hotel, by the high school and on the Tunnel Trail to the Plainfield, IN water tower and back in about 44 minutes.   I overdress and was pretty warm but was able to shed a layer and it was good.  Hammy ok, much better than last night on the plane.  On our way to Shelbyville to see family and my ailing grandmother.  (Boost)

Early flight back to Idaho Falls after a late night last night (watching a movie, "Oblivion", and talking to the IF XC Coach late).   Slept the whole flight back...still tired.

I went out with Katelyn and Moxie for 2 miles right after school then took the boys out for some fartleks and hills for 5 miles.   Overall a good workout.  We had a discussion about team dynamics, running as an analogy for life, miscommunication and forgiveness, and synergy.  Dealing with some issues from a run when I was out of town.  (Fastwitch Red)

I have the day off.  I went to the gym with Katelyn before school for her to get a run in on this cold day (15 degrees outside!).  I ran 3 miles, the last quarter at 4:17.   After taking the kids to school, Kami and I went back to the gym.  I ran 7 miles in 43:45 (6:15 AP) as a progression, starting easy then up to MP or better for the last 2 miles before a mile cooldown.  Not ready to be back at the gym but the time is here.  (Fastwitch Red)

2.5 miles with Justin and Matthew at Community Park.  Legs were very stiff and in the frigig cold it was really bad.  Matthew was underdressed for the temps so we called it off early to try to get warm.  (Ride 3)

Too cold to go outside and my entire left leg is twingy.  I also have a bit of a sore throat so no run this morning or likely today.

5 miles at lunch on a nice but very cold day.  Had to work off stress from church, coaching, family...work going good.  (Mirage Red)

5:00am...9 miles at the gym in 56:50 (6:19 AP).  Progression run started easy for a few miles then into MP and 1 mile at 5:40 or better including a 400m in 64 sec.  Hammy starting to feel better.  (Fastwitch Red)

Trying to decided if the team and parents are going to make the trip to Boise for the Nike Cross Nationals Northwest meet tomorrow...roads are crappy and staying bad through tonight.  Boise is hammered with 6+ inches of snow and all schools are closed and roads are bad.  Worth it for a 20 minute race?  5+ hours of white knuckle driving both ways?  We have decided not to go due to the treacherous traveling conditions.  A bummer for the boys, but not worth the risk to all the families.

6:00am...went to the gym early as it was pretty cold outside and I was going to meet the kids when Kami brought them.  10 miles in 1:04:15.  Mostly easy (6:30ish) but the last few I pushed into slow MP and the last mile was at 5:40 AP.  (Fastwitch Red)

Bummed the kids are not running, but glad we made the decision we did. Justin's calf is really bothering him today so maybe that is a good indication too.  Taking the boys out later for a fun run in the snow and a pizza party at our house to ease the let down from not going to NXN.

5 miles with the boys in the snow.  Ran through SRL, had a snowball fight, dunked each other in the snow banks, ran to Bill's and snowballed Gray and Cody, then ran home to have pizza, brownie sundaes and hang out.  My pleasure and honor to have coached such a great group of young men and runners!  (Xodus)

Got into Honolulu late last night and to the hotel late.  Nonetheless, we were up early and I took the whole family to Kapahulu Park to see the sunrise.  On the way home, we stopped by Leonard's for malasadas and Pao doce wraps.  Then we went for a run, the whole family!

We ran 3 miles down Waikiki beach to the aquarium and back then Justin and I ran an additional 2 miles by the Hilton Hawaiian Village to the Honolulu Yacht Club (HYC).  Good start to the vacation!

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
8.005.000.000.0013.00

Justin and I got up early and ran to the bandshell at the Kapiolani Park to register for the Honolulu Marathon Clinic Prediction Run 10 mile Turkey Trot.  It is a training run for the marathon.  $6 for a supported run..not bad.  Got our tongue depressors and put down 1:10 as we were planning on running together plus dealing with the heat and windy conditions.  Met a few nice folks waiting for the run to start.  No watches or GPS...idea is to gauge your pace and try to come in as close to your prediction as possible.  From what we heard, you need to be within 10 seconds to have a chance of winning.

We went out in the front group and did the loop around the park before heading up the crater road.  Still near the middle of the front pack but Justin's stomach was causing him to drop back from me.  As I was running up the hill I would look back to check on him and see if he was staying close.  After getting up on over the crater and starting our way up the back side we took off down towards the neighborhood on the back side towards Kahala.  I stopped and waited for Justin at the turn off from the crater road and ran with him for the next couple of miles trying to motivate him to dig deep.  His stomach was hurting so he said go.

I picked it up a bit at the halfway point (or where I thought it was).  I started to pick off the runners ahead as we made our way back to Kahala and up the crater.  It was getting warmer through here as the sun was coming out and shining brightly.  On the way back down towards Kapiolani Park I was really cruising and passing runners.  Along Kalakaua I kicked in and passed a few more to catch all the runners except for about 5 of them.  Ended up at 1:07:57 so a bit under the prediction.  I ran back to bring Justin in at 1:13.  He said he threw up a couple of times but still had a kick at the end. Proud of him and his effort.

We ran back to the hotel and rested before the Thanksgiving buffet and pool time.  Justin did not feel good all day.
