Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

I ran the big local fund raiser race, the Scenic River Classic  2nd overall to a 18 year old by about 10 seconds...not a bad time considering I ran marathon a week ago.

Went out easy in the race and was sitting patiently behind Cody (1st place) throughout the whole race until about mile 5 where he slowed and I caught him at 5.5M.  Almost got hit by a car crossing over Broadway (had police on one side and not the other crossing...had to come to a complete stop!).  My legs were feeling a bit heavy and his youth paid off and he had a bit more of a kick in the last 0.25M than I did...I should have pushed harder to try and break his spirits (note:  fight harder at the end!) and take the win but alas it didn't happen (I kinda gave in and that is disappointing but I am happy with the time overall).

I ran 2M warmup, then the race, then 1M fun run with my son (who ran an 8:20 mile!) and a bit more to finish of 2M after the race.

Cool and cloudy and threatening rain (then the sun would come out at times).  Dark clouds loooming...I hope it rains so Kami doesn't get too pissed that we didn't camp!

Nice job on the race. You are quick man!!! Don't worry, it looks like it is going to storm like crazy!!! Have a good week and thanks for the encouragement.

Nice race.

10 seconds behind youth sounds pretty good after 40 years! HAHA!

Jeff,

Great job on your race! Also, happy early fathers day.

Great job and even a week after the marathon. You would have smoked him if you were totally fresh.

I couldn't make it up there today because of an appointment I had today.

Nice race coming off a marathon. How old is your boy? 9 like it says in your profile, or was that written two years ago when you joined? I didn't run an 8:24 until I was a freshman.

From jtshad on Sat, Jun 20, 2009 at 16:32:58 from 69.20.188.98

Thanks guys! Yeah, the effort was good just needed to push harder at 5.5M to break his spirits and I didn't do it. Overall really happy with the result.

Burt, he is 9 now and turns 10 in about 2 months...he wants to run a 5K later this year (but needs to train for it, not have me pushing him to train).

Thanks Barry on the Father's day wish!

Kory, I won't be able to do the TO Bone and Back, it is my daughter's birthday party next Saturday and have to go with the bigger priority.

Good luck at the race and have fun!

Jeff - do you know about the second leg if it's a gradual climb or steep all of a sudden. I don't trust elevation charts.

From Robert on Sat, Jun 20, 2009 at 18:10:12 from 67.41.105.58

Wow, a 10K time like that after a marathon! Please pass me your special recovery elixir!

From Jon on Sat, Jun 20, 2009 at 18:16:54 from 75.169.152.60

Nice job, congrats on 2nd place.

Good recovery!

From jtshad on Sat, Jun 20, 2009 at 19:17:38 from 69.20.188.98

Kory, leg 2 is a good climb. It is a serious uphill leg except for a small decline about 2M in. It starts to get steep again about 3M, then it gets steeper at mile 4 for about 0.6M and the last 0.4M flattens out a little. It is a tough climb.

Nicely done, and big congrats to your son! That is a great mile run. I bought my 9 year old son some running shorts today and he gave them back and said he is done running. Hmmm....he was in a foul mood so we will see what he says tomorrow. He has loved running so far.

This weekend I ran with Walter and he was telling me that you actually met my husband before the Utah Valley Marathon (the short bald guy with Walter who calls himself a hacker when it comes to marathoning). Anyway, my husband had talked about you after the marathon, it just took Walter to help me put two and two together.

Have a great rest of the weekend.

Kelli, so your husband is Scott? Very nice guy, it was a pleasure talking with him at the race.

I hope you had a fun time at the WBR!

Don't give up on your son...my son waffles back and forth on running too, just need to give them time and space and gentle pressure to keep them interested.

From MichelleL on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 11:57:08 from 71.35.250.200

Nice job Jeff. My son trained for a 5k last summer and hasn't run since, he was 8 then and thus 9 now. I hope all my kids will catch the fire.

From Adam RW on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 16:36:41 from 98.202.223.65

A great time considering you ran a marathon a week ago. Congratulations to your son on his mile as well. Happy Father's Day.

From Kelli on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 17:34:12 from 71.219.76.64

Yup, Scott is mine. See where I get my feisty attitude from now?

I will not give up on my son, he already asked me if he could have his running shorts back and run with me tomorrow. He even said he would get up early. He is a MOODY kids. But he can (and hopefully will) be a great runner so I want him to WANT to run. We will see what the next day brings.

From Mark on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 11:03:04 from 24.129.132.74

Great race Jeff! Especially so for a recovery run. I'll bet next time there is an 18 year old between you and first place, then experience will prevail :)

From JimF on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 11:57:19 from 68.58.159.212

Great job on the race especially considering you ran a marathon last week. Amazing.
